Overview

What good heat pump installation looks like

Most heat pump complaints we hear trace back to installation, not the equipment. A unit that is too large short-cycles and leaves rooms clammy. One that is too small runs its backup heat all winter. Refrigerant lines that were not pressure-tested or evacuated properly slowly lose charge. Our heat pump installation process is built to avoid all of that.

We start with a room-by-room heat loss calculation instead of guessing from square footage or copying the old unit's size. Then we look at ductwork, the electrical panel, where the outdoor unit can sit, and how condensate will drain. Only then do we recommend a ducted system, a ductless mini-split, a multi-zone setup or a dual fuel pairing with your gas furnace.

On installation day we mount the outdoor unit on a stand or wall bracket high enough to clear snow and let defrost water drain, run and insulate the line set, nitrogen pressure-test, pull a deep vacuum, and confirm the charge under real operating conditions.

What to know

Heat pump installation options

We match the system to your home rather than the other way around.

01

Central ducted heat pump

Replaces or works alongside a furnace and uses your existing ducts to heat and cool the whole house.

02

Single-zone mini-split

One indoor head and one outdoor unit, perfect for an open living area, suite or hot upstairs bedroom.

03

Multi-zone ductless

Several indoor heads on one outdoor unit, each with its own temperature, for homes without ducts.

04

Dual fuel pairing

A heat pump plus a gas furnace for backup, switching automatically on the coldest days.

05

Cold-climate upgrade

High-performance units that keep heating in hard frost, for colder valleys and exposed hillsides.

06

Ducted mini-split air handler

A compact concealed unit that serves a few rooms through short duct runs, with no visible wall heads.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

How long does heat pump installation take?

A single-zone ductless system is often a one-day job. A central ducted heat pump or a multi-zone system usually takes one to three days, depending on ductwork changes and electrical work. We give you a realistic schedule with your quote.

Where will the outdoor unit go?

Usually at the side or back of the house, on a raised stand or wall bracket. We need clearance for airflow and service, a spot where defrost water can drain without freezing on a walkway, and some distance from bedroom windows and neighbours to keep sound down.

Do I need a permit for a heat pump?

Most installations involve electrical and sometimes mechanical permits, and some municipalities have rules about outdoor unit placement or noise. We let you know what applies to your property and handle the required permits as part of the job.

What size heat pump do I need?

It depends on insulation, windows, air leakage, ceiling heights and your local climate, not just square footage. We calculate heat loss room by room, then choose equipment that can cover your design temperature without oversizing.

Can a heat pump replace my furnace completely?

In many Metro Vancouver homes it can, especially with a cold-climate model and some electric backup. If you would rather keep gas for the coldest days, a dual fuel setup is a good middle ground.
