Overview

What mini-split systems are and who they suit

A mini-split is a heat pump split into two parts: an outdoor unit with the compressor, and one or more indoor heads that deliver warm or cool air directly into the room. A small bundle of refrigerant tubing, wiring and a drain line passes through a hole about the size of a coffee can in the wall. Nothing needs to be cut into ceilings or floors for ductwork.

That makes mini-split systems a natural fit for homes heated by electric baseboards, condos and townhomes, older houses with hot water or oil heat, garage conversions, basement suites and additions. Each indoor head has its own thermostat, so a cool bedroom and a warm living room can coexist, and rooms nobody is using can be turned down.

Indoor heads come in several styles: high-wall units, ceiling cassettes, floor consoles and slim concealed ducted units that hide in a bulkhead. We help you pick the style and location that heats the room evenly and looks right in your space.

What to know

Why homeowners choose mini-splits

Ductless systems solve problems that central systems cannot.

01

No ductwork needed

Ideal for homes with baseboards or radiators, where adding ducts would mean tearing open walls and ceilings.

02

Room-by-room control

Every head has its own setting, so you heat and cool only the spaces you actually use.

03

Efficient inverter technology

Variable-speed compressors adjust output smoothly and usually use much less power than baseboard heat.

04

Cooling for heat waves

The same system that heats in winter keeps bedrooms livable when summer temperatures spike.

05

Works in condos

Compact outdoor units fit on balconies or approved wall locations, subject to strata approval.

06

Filtered, quiet air

Indoor heads have washable filters and run very quietly at low speeds, which suits bedrooms.

How it works

How we install a mini-split system

  1. 1

    Measure and plan

We look at each room, calculate the load and map out head locations, line routes and drainage.

  2. 2

    Clear quote

You get a written quote with the equipment, layout and any electrical work spelled out.

  3. 3

    Clean installation

We mount heads and the outdoor unit, run tidy covered lines, pressure-test and evacuate the system.

  4. 4

    Set up and teach

We commission each zone, pair remotes or Wi-Fi controls and show you filter care.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

How many indoor heads do I need?

It depends on your layout. Open-plan spaces can often be covered by one head, while closed bedrooms usually need their own. We calculate each room's load rather than putting a head everywhere by default, which keeps cost and complexity down.

Can a mini-split heat my whole home?

In many homes, yes, especially smaller houses, townhomes and condos with reasonable insulation. Larger or older homes may use a multi-zone system or keep some existing heat as backup for the coldest days.

Do mini-splits work in cold weather?

Cold-climate mini-splits keep heating well below freezing. Output drops as temperatures fall, so we size the system for local design temperatures and discuss backup if your area gets harsh cold snaps.

Will I need strata permission in a condo?

Usually yes. Outdoor unit placement, wall penetrations and electrical work often need approval from the strata council or building manager. We can supply equipment specifications, sound data and a layout to support your request.

How do I keep the indoor heads clean?

Wash the filters every few weeks during heavy use. Every year or two, a technician should deep-clean the coil and blower wheel, which prevents musty odours and keeps airflow strong.
