Cleaner evaporator coil
Prevents the biofilm that slowly coats coil fins and restricts airflow.
A cooling coil is dark and damp much of the year, which is exactly where mould and bacteria grow. An ultraviolet lamp mounted in your system keeps that surface clean.
No heat, no hot water or a gas smell? Call any time, day or night.
UV air purifiers use UV-C light, a short wavelength that damages the genetic material of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce. Installed inside a furnace, air handler or heat pump, the lamp shines on the evaporator coil and drain pan, where condensation creates a damp surface that collects biological growth. Keeping that surface clean helps prevent musty odours and helps the coil transfer heat as designed.
It is worth being clear about limits. UV light does not trap dust, pollen or smoke, and airborne microbes passing the lamp at speed receive only a brief exposure. That is why we always pair UV with good filtration. In heat pump homes, where the coil stays wet in cooling season and runs through damp shoulder seasons, a coil-facing lamp is often the most useful air quality add-on after a better filter.
Where UV makes the biggest difference.
Prevents the biofilm that slowly coats coil fins and restricts airflow.
The dirty-sock smell at start-up often comes from growth on a wet coil.
Less slime in the pan and line reduces the chance of condensate clogs and overflows.
Coils that run wet much of the year benefit most from constant UV exposure.
A clean coil holds its rated capacity better than one fouled with growth.
UV handles microbes on surfaces while a quality filter captures particles.
We look at the coil, drain pan and cabinet to decide on lamp position and type.
Coil-facing lamps suit most homes; dual lamps can also treat the air stream.
The lamp is installed in the plenum or cabinet with a power supply and safety interlock.
We record the install date and explain when the lamp should be replaced.
We explain what UV can and cannot do so you know exactly what you are paying for.
Lamps are placed to protect plastic parts and wiring from UV exposure.
We can swap the lamp during your annual furnace or heat pump maintenance.

Most residential UV-C lamps should be replaced about every 12 months. The lamp keeps glowing after that, but its germicidal output drops considerably, so the visible light is not a good indicator.
Some lamps produce small amounts of ozone by design. For homes we use ozone-free lamps, since ozone can irritate the lungs.
It can help people sensitive to mould by keeping the coil and pan clean. It does not remove pollen, dust or pet dander, so a high-quality filter is still the main tool for allergies.
UV-C can degrade some plastics and wire insulation over time. Correct lamp placement and shielding reduce that risk, which is one reason professional installation is worth it.
Less so. Without a cooling coil there is no constantly wet surface for growth. UV makes the most sense in homes with air conditioning or a heat pump.
