Overview

Why a sewer camera inspection beats guessing

When a drain clogs for the third time in a year, cleaning it again treats the symptom. A sewer camera inspection shows the cause: a cracked clay joint with roots growing through it, a section that has settled and holds water, a collapsed pipe, a misaligned connection or a heavy grease build-up. The camera head is fed through a cleanout and records high-resolution video as it travels.

Most systems include a locating transmitter in the camera head. When the camera finds a problem, we can trace it from above ground and mark the location and approximate depth on your lawn or driveway. That turns a potentially large dig into a targeted repair and gives you solid information if you are comparing options.

What to know

When a camera inspection is worth it

These are the situations where scoping pays for itself.

01

Recurring clogs

If the same line backs up repeatedly, the camera reveals whether roots, a sag or a break is to blame.

02

Buying an older home

Many pre-1980s homes have clay or concrete laterals; a scope before purchase shows their condition.

03

Large trees nearby

Roots seek moisture in sewer joints, especially from willows, maples and poplars.

04

Planning a renovation

Know the condition of drains under a slab before new flooring or a basement suite goes in.

05

Persistent sewer odour

A camera can spot cracks, open joints or missing connections causing smells.

06

Finding buried lines

The locator shows where a pipe runs and how deep before landscaping or excavation.

Included

What we look for on the video

  • Root intrusion at joints and how severe it is
  • Cracks, fractures and broken sections
  • Offset or separated joints
  • Bellies or sags where water and waste pool
  • Grease, scale or debris build-up
  • Pipe material changes and old repairs
  • Distance from the cleanout to each defect
How it works

How the inspection is done

  1. 1

    Access the line

We use an existing cleanout or, if needed, remove a toilet to reach the drain.

  2. 2

    Clear if necessary

A badly blocked line may need cleaning first so the camera can travel through.

  3. 3

    Record and locate

We push the camera through, watch the footage live with you and mark any problem spots.

  4. 4

    Explain the options

You get our findings in plain language with options such as maintenance, spot repair or replacement.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

Do I get a copy of the video?

We can usually provide a recording or still images of significant findings, which is useful for home purchases, strata records or comparing repair quotes.

Does a camera inspection damage the pipe?

No. The camera head is smooth and pushed gently through the line. If the pipe is badly collapsed, the camera simply stops at the obstruction, which itself tells us where the problem is.

How far can the camera go?

Typical residential camera systems can travel well over 30 metres, enough to reach the property line on most homes. Very long runs or multiple bends may need access from a second cleanout.

What if my house does not have a cleanout?

We can often access the drain by removing a toilet or through a roof vent. If access is very limited, we may suggest installing a proper cleanout, which makes future maintenance easier.

Should I get a sewer scope before buying a house?

For homes with original clay or concrete laterals or large trees near the line, it is a smart step. Sewer line repairs are among the more costly surprises for new owners and are not always visible during a standard home inspection.
