Overview

When heat pump replacement makes sense

Heat pumps work hard year-round, and many original systems in Metro Vancouver homes are now well past their prime. Signs it may be time for a heat pump replacement include repeated repairs, a compressor or coil failure, an old refrigerant that is expensive to service, rooms that never quite get comfortable, and electricity bills creeping up every year.

Replacement is also a chance to fix what never worked. Many older heat pumps were sized by matching the furnace or simply copying a neighbour's unit. Since then your home may have new windows, more insulation or a finished basement. We redo the heat loss calculation so the new system matches the house you live in now, not the one that was built.

Today's variable-speed inverter heat pumps also behave very differently from the single-stage units they replace. They ramp up and down gently, run quieter, hold temperature more evenly and keep heating at much colder outdoor temperatures.

What to know

Reasons homeowners replace their heat pump

Usually it is a mix of cost, comfort and reliability.

01

Frequent breakdowns

When repair calls stack up each season, the money is often better spent on a reliable new system.

02

Major component failure

A failed compressor or leaking coil on an older unit is often the moment to weigh replacement.

03

Outdated refrigerant

Systems using phased-out refrigerants are increasingly costly to recharge and repair.

04

Rising running costs

Older single-speed units use far more electricity than modern inverter models for the same heat.

05

Poor cold-weather heat

If the backup strips run all through every cold snap, a cold-climate model can make a real difference.

06

Loud outdoor unit

Newer units are much quieter, which neighbours and anyone sleeping near the unit will appreciate.

Included

What we check when planning a replacement

  • Updated heat loss and heat gain calculation
  • Duct sizing and airflow for the new equipment
  • Whether the existing line set can be reused safely
  • Electrical circuit size and panel capacity
  • Pad or bracket condition and outdoor placement
  • Indoor coil and furnace or air handler compatibility
  • Current rebate programs that may apply
How it works

Our heat pump replacement process

  1. 1

    Assess the old system

We look at what failed, how the system has performed and what you would like to change.

  2. 2

    Written options

You get a clear quote, often with a couple of equipment choices so you can weigh cost and features.

  3. 3

    Remove and install

We recover the old refrigerant properly, remove the old equipment and install the new system cleanly.

  4. 4

    Commission and explain

We test performance in heating and cooling, set controls and show you how to get the most from it.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

How long does a heat pump usually last?

Many heat pumps last somewhere in the mid-teens of years with good maintenance, though coastal air, heavy use and skipped service can shorten that. Age alone is not a reason to replace, but it does change the math when a big repair comes up.

Can I replace only the outdoor unit?

Usually not on a central system. The outdoor unit and indoor coil are designed as a matched pair, and newer refrigerants often need a compatible coil. Mixing old and new parts tends to reduce efficiency and reliability.

Do I need new refrigerant lines?

Sometimes the existing line set can be flushed and reused if it is the right size and in good condition. If it is undersized, damaged or not compatible with the new refrigerant, we replace it. We check this before quoting.

Is it worth switching from ducted to ductless during replacement?

In some homes, yes. If ducts are leaky, undersized or run through cold spaces, a ductless or ducted mini-split layout may give better comfort. In other homes, the existing ducts work well and a central replacement is simpler.

What happens to my old heat pump?

We recover the refrigerant with proper equipment and take the old unit away for recycling. You will not be left with old equipment in the yard.
