Overview

Heat pump installation in Burnaby: condos and houses

Burnaby has two very different kinds of heat pump projects. In high-rise and mid-rise condos, owners usually want to replace electric baseboards or add cooling to suites that overheat behind floor-to-ceiling glass. In older detached homes, the goal is often to add air conditioning and cut gas use without tearing the house apart. Heat pump installation in Burnaby means being comfortable with both.

For condos, the hard part is rarely the equipment. It is getting approval, finding a legal spot for the outdoor unit, routing lines neatly and working within building rules on noise, hours and elevator bookings. We help you prepare a clear request for your strata council so the decision is easier to make.

What to know

What Burnaby homeowners usually ask us for

These are the projects we plan most often in the city.

01

Balcony mini-split for a condo

A compact outdoor unit on the balcony or an approved wall bracket, serving one or two indoor heads.

02

Cooling for glass-walled suites

South and west-facing units with large windows need careful cooling sizing to stay comfortable in July.

03

Replacing electric baseboards

A heat pump can heat the same suite for noticeably less electricity than resistance baseboards.

04

Central system for older houses

Detached homes with forced air can add a ducted heat pump on the existing furnace or air handler.

05

Concealed ducted units

Slim air handlers hidden in a bulkhead keep townhome rooms free of visible wall heads.

06

Low-sound outdoor units

Close neighbours and shared walls make quiet equipment and careful placement a priority.

Local service

Heat pumps from Brentwood to the South Slope

Towers around Metrotown, Brentwood and Edmonds make up a large share of our Burnaby heat pump work, along with the UniverCity community on Burnaby Mountain, where winter is noticeably cooler and wetter than down by the Fraser.

On the detached side, we work in older homes in Burnaby Heights, Capitol Hill, Deer Lake and the South Slope. Many have original ductwork and 100-amp panels, so we always check whether the existing ducts and electrical can carry a heat pump before recommending one.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

Can I put a heat pump on my Burnaby condo balcony?

Often, yes, but it depends on your strata bylaws and building design. Some buildings allow balcony units on pads or brackets, others require a specific wall location or limit size. We help you find what your building permits and prepare the information council needs.

How do you drain condensate in a high-rise suite?

Ideally the drain runs by gravity to an existing drain point, such as a balcony drain or plumbing stack where allowed. If that is not possible, a small condensate pump moves the water. We plan this before installation so there are no leaks later.

My Burnaby house has a 100-amp panel. Is that enough?

Sometimes. A small heat pump may fit, but with an electric range, dryer and other loads it can be tight. We calculate the load and tell you if a load management device or panel upgrade is needed.

How much space does a condo heat pump need?

A single-zone outdoor unit is roughly the size of a small suitcase on its side, though it needs clearance around it for airflow. Indoor heads mount high on a wall and take up very little space.

Will a heat pump help my suite in a heat wave?

Yes. Many Burnaby suites with large windows trap heat for days during heat events. A properly sized heat pump can keep bedrooms at a sleepable temperature even when it is very hot outside.
