Overview

Boiler repair that finds the cause, not just the symptom

Boiler problems rarely come out of nowhere. A pilot that keeps going out may be a worn thermocouple, or it may be a venting draft problem. A relief valve that drips is usually a symptom of a waterlogged expansion tank, not a bad valve. Replacing the obvious part without asking why it failed is how the same problem comes back next month.

Our boiler repair visits start with a full look at the system: burner and ignition, venting, pressure, expansion tank, pumps, zone valves and controls. We explain what we found and what it will cost before we touch anything. If the boiler is unsafe to run, we tell you plainly and make it safe. For a breakdown at night or on a weekend, call (236) 222-2222.

What to know

Common boiler problems we repair

These are the calls we get most often, and what usually sits behind them.

01

No heat or ignition lockout

Failed igniters, dirty flame sensors, gas valve faults or blocked condensate drains can all stop a boiler from firing.

02

Pressure too high or low

High pressure often means a failed expansion tank or fill valve. Low pressure points to a leak or a recent purge.

03

Leaks and drips

We trace water to its source, from relief valves and pump flanges to corroded fittings and cracked sections.

04

Banging, kettling, gurgling

Air in the lines, scale on the heat exchanger or a failing circulator each have a distinct sound.

05

Cold rooms or zones

Stuck zone valves, air locks and dead pumps leave parts of the house cold while the boiler runs.

06

Combi hot water faults

Lukewarm or fluctuating showers usually trace back to the flow sensor, diverter valve or plate heat exchanger.

Included

Before you call, it helps to check

  • Is the thermostat calling for heat and does it have power?
  • What does the pressure gauge read?
  • Is there an error code on the boiler display?
  • Is the boiler switch or breaker on?
  • Are other gas appliances working normally?
  • Is any water pooling under the boiler or pipes?
  • If you smell gas or your CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call from outside

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

Why does my boiler pressure keep rising?

The most common cause is an expansion tank that has lost its air charge, so there is nowhere for heated water to expand. A leaking fill valve that keeps feeding water in can do the same. Either way, the relief valve may start to drip, which is a sign to call.

My boiler shows an error code. Should I keep resetting it?

One reset is reasonable. If it locks out again, stop, because repeated resets can flood the combustion chamber or mask a venting or flame problem. Note the code and call us.

Why is one zone cold while the rest of the house is warm?

Usually a zone valve that is not opening, a failed zone pump, or an air lock in that loop. We check the thermostat wiring and the valve motor, then purge the loop if air is the problem.

Is it worth repairing an old cast-iron boiler?

Often it is. Cast-iron boilers can run for a very long time if the heat exchanger is sound. If sections are cracked or leaking, or parts are no longer available, we will tell you honestly and explain replacement options.

What should I do if my CO alarm goes off?

Get everyone out of the house, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line from outside, and do not go back in until it is cleared. Then call us to find and fix the cause before the boiler runs again.
