Overview

Why a natural gas storage water heater still makes sense

A natural gas storage water heater keeps forty to seventy-five gallons of water hot and ready, so several showers, a dishwasher and a load of laundry can run without waiting. Gas reheats the tank much faster than an electric element, which matters in busy homes and in houses with a basement suite.

The trade-off is standby heat loss and a tank that wears out with time. A well-sized tank with a correctly drafting vent, a healthy anode rod and a clean burner gives you dependable hot water for years. We help you pick the right size and efficiency level, install it to code with the right venting and seismic restraint, and keep it running safely.

What to know

Signs your gas tank needs attention

Most problems give a warning before the tank fails completely.

01

Hot water runs out early

Sediment on the tank floor or a failing dip tube cuts the usable hot water, so showers turn lukewarm sooner than they used to.

02

Rumbling or popping sounds

Water trapped under hardened sediment boils against the burner. It wastes gas and stresses the bottom of the tank.

03

Moisture around the base

A wet pan or rust streaks can mean a leaking fitting, a weeping relief valve or an inner tank that has started to fail.

04

Pilot or burner trouble

A pilot that keeps going out, a yellow lazy flame or soot near the burner door needs a technician, not a relight.

05

Smell of gas or exhaust

Leave the house and call right away. Poor venting or a gas leak is a safety issue, never something to wait on.

06

Tank is ten years or older

Gas tanks usually last eight to twelve years. Planning a replacement beats dealing with a flooded basement.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

How long does a natural gas storage water heater last?

Most last eight to twelve years. Regular flushing, a healthy anode rod and correct water temperature help a tank reach the upper end of that range.

What size tank do I need?

A family of two or three is often fine with forty gallons. Larger families and homes with a basement suite usually need fifty to seventy-five gallons or a higher recovery model. We confirm sizing during the visit.

Should I switch to a tankless water heater instead?

Tankless units save space and standby losses but cost more to install and may need a larger gas line and new venting. We explain both options for your home so you can choose.

Can you replace my tank the same visit?

Often yes, if the right tank is available and the venting does not need major changes. We will tell you what is involved when we quote.

My relief valve is dripping. Is that dangerous?

A dripping temperature and pressure relief valve can point to high pressure, overheating or a worn valve. Have it checked soon, and call right away if it is discharging steadily.
