Overview

Choosing home cooling in Metro Vancouver

Not long ago most local houses got by with an open window and a box fan. After the 2021 heat dome, and the hot spells that keep following it, plenty of families decided they never want another week of 35 degree bedrooms. Our home cooling services in Metro Vancouver start with a simple question: what kind of house do you live in, and which rooms actually overheat?

From there the answer might be a central air conditioner on your existing furnace, a ducted heat pump that cools in July and heats in January, a ductless mini-split for a condo or a converted attic, or a dual fuel setup that pairs a heat pump with gas backup. Able Pro installs, repairs and maintains all of them, and we explain the trade-offs in plain language before you commit to anything.

What to know

Ways to cool your home

Each system suits a different kind of home, budget priority and comfort goal.

01

Central air conditioning

An outdoor condenser and an indoor coil on your furnace push cool air through the ducts you already have. Simple, whole-home and familiar.

02

Ducted heat pump

Looks like central air but runs in reverse in winter, so one outdoor unit handles both seasons and cuts how often the furnace runs.

03

Ductless mini-split

Wall-mounted heads connected to a compact outdoor unit. Ideal for condos, additions, basement suites and homes heated by baseboards or a boiler.

04

Dual fuel system

A heat pump does the cooling and most of the heating, while a gas furnace takes over during an arctic outflow cold snap.

05

Humidity control

Muggy summer air near the Fraser and Pitt rivers feels hotter than the thermometer says. Proper sizing and fan settings pull moisture out as well as heat.

06

Heat wave readiness

Pre-season servicing, clean coils and a healthy capacitor are what keep a system running through day five of a heat warning.

Included

Signs your home needs better cooling

  • Upstairs bedrooms stay hot long after sunset
  • You run portable units or fans all summer
  • Your existing AC is old and uses R-22
  • One room or suite never cools down
  • Indoor air feels sticky even when it is mild
  • Family members struggle to sleep during heat warnings
  • Your furnace or baseboards need replacing anyway
How it works

How we plan your cooling

  1. 1

    Talk through your home

We ask which rooms overheat, how you heat now and what you want to change. A quick call or online booking gets this started.

  2. 2

    Measure and assess

A technician checks insulation, window exposure, ductwork, electrical capacity and where outdoor equipment could sit.

  3. 3

    Compare clear options

You get a written quote with one or more options and an honest explanation of what each does well and where it falls short.

  4. 4

    Install and follow up

We install tidily, test the system under load, show you the controls and set you up with ongoing maintenance if you want it.

Questions

Questions homeowners ask us

Still unsure? Call (236) 222-2222 and talk it through with us.

Should I get a heat pump or a central air conditioner?

If your furnace is getting older or you want lower heating bills, a heat pump usually makes more sense because it covers both seasons. If your furnace is fairly new and you only want summer comfort, a central AC can be the simpler choice. We will lay out both so you can compare.

Can I add cooling to a home without ductwork?

Yes. Ductless mini-splits were made for exactly that. One outdoor unit can serve several indoor heads, so you can cool bedrooms and living areas without opening walls for ducts.

Do I need permission to install cooling in a condo or townhome?

Usually yes. Most strata corporations have rules about where outdoor units go, noise and penetrations through exterior walls. We can provide equipment details and drawings your strata council needs to make a decision.

Is my electrical panel big enough for air conditioning?

Many homes have room for a new circuit, but some older panels are already full or undersized. We check during the assessment, and because Able Pro also handles electrical work, we can plan any panel or circuit changes as part of the job.

When is the best time to install cooling?

Spring and early fall are calmer and give you more scheduling choice. Waiting for the first heat warning means competing with everyone else who had the same idea, so planning ahead pays off.

Are there rebates for home cooling?

Plain air conditioners generally do not qualify, but eligible heat pumps often do through programs such as CleanBC Better Homes and utility offers. Amounts and rules change, so we confirm what applies during your quote.
